The Wager

Captain Tom Mason of Homicide was a worried man—and with good reason. Murder had broken out on his precinct, murder in a peculiarly horrible form: the victim had been decapitated. But what worryied Mason most was the fact that the severed head was not found at the crime scene—only the body. The murderer appeared to have taken it as a grisly trophy.


Prompt police action had cordoned off the area, and yielded four suspects. An eyewitness identified one of them as the man he saw running from the scene, and he was held in custody.


But then another three people were decapitated….
