APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
Hollywood screenwriter Terry Hayes blazed onto the literary scene in 2013 with international bestseller I Am Pilgrim. His long-awaited sophomore novel is even more high-octane with higher stakes. Kane is a “Denied Access Area” spy for the CIA, venturing behind enemy lines on deadly off-the-books missions. He’s sent to the borderlands between Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan—one of the most dangerous places on earth—to extract an asset with vital intel about a planned attack on the West. When the op goes tragically wrong, he’s instead thrown into the path of the world’s most wanted terrorist—a formidable foe who he’ll pursue across two decades and several continents. Their cat-and-mouse duel is described in muscular prose, rich with detailed tradecraft and military tech. This is a post-9/11 world of the dark web and AI, of bioweapons and Blackwater operatives, of surgical missile strikes and stealth surveillance. The surprise final act is as inventive and ambitious as anything Hayes has written, and caps a nail-gnawing thriller, full of adrenalised action, suspenseful set pieces and cinematic imagery.
Customer Reviews
So much potential…..
Like other reviewers comments the events about three quarters of the way through the book were an interesting surprise just not a welcome one.
Having read the sample from years ago and the reviews I couldn’t believe the full book would be as bad as one star, especially after reading I am Pilgrim, until I got to the twist.
It wasn’t a one star overall because there’s a really good idea that for a reason only the author could understand he decided to undo. Yes, it was a shock the problem is it ruined the storey and maybe that was the author’s intention to shock with such a drastic change.
You’ve still got a good book at a reasonable price, the sad bit is it should’ve been a great book.
Surprising in a good way
I was captured by this book immediately. The different parts and different stories made it feel like 3 different books. I wasn’t expecting the ending but I loved it nonetheless. I honestly couldn’t predict this book which is key!
Hard to review
I enjoyed it immensely for 60%, then begrudgingly fought through 20%, only to enjoy the final 20%. 3.5 stars if I could….
