Publisher Description

'A joy of a book - enriching, illuminating, eclectic and far from a conventional science read' Richard Webb, New Scientist Books of the Year

'Carlo Rovelli's imaginative rigour, his lively humour and his beautiful writing are inspiring' Erica Wagner

One of the most inspiring thinkers of our age, the bestselling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics transforms the way we think about the world with his reflections on science, history and humanity

In this collection of writings, the logbook of an intelligence always on the move, Carlo Rovelli follows his curiosity and invites us on a voyage through science, history, philosophy and politics.

Written with his usual clarity and wit, these pieces range widely across time and space: from Newton's alchemy to Einstein's mistakes, from Nabokov's butterflies to Dante's cosmology, from travels in Africa to the consciousness of an octopus, from mind-altering psychedelic substances to the meaning of atheism.

Charming, pithy and elegant, this book is the perfect gateway to the universe of one of the most influential scientists of our age.

Quietly brilliant.

A knowledge Compound Book Club read:

I loved this book. Hooked by the title I suggested it as June 2024's read, weirdly I regret it. Our book club reads are hurriedly devoured, usually in the week before the meeting (last Thursday of the month) and this book deserves to be savoured.

I thought it would be a book about ideas, when I read in the preface that it was actually a collection of already published articles I realised my mistake. Book club likes 'beginning, middle, end' books. Books with an easily identifiable subject or message. This book has many subjects, many messages. It takes a meandering path, visiting the beginnings of civilisation, major scientific discoveries and insights into cosmology along the way.

I will buy a physical copy of this book, so I can re read at my own pace and mull over the ideas inside it with unhurried contemplation. Whether they are articles about how he feels about something, or a retelling of facts, I thought there was something worth thinking about in each one.

Not just about theories and discoveries, he speaks of the people behind them. It doesn't just cover academic principles or facts but also touches on philosophical ideas, emotions and what it is to be human. It's not it's title. It's much more.
