Following the fatal fire that reduces the Morris and Wood advertising agency's showplace headquarters on Britain's south coast to smoldering rubble, the Lymington police face a somewhat unusual problem a glut of suspects in this ingeniously plotted page-turner from Perks (Her One Mistake). Persons of interest include CEO Harry Wood's disgruntled wife, prominent former barrister Janie; Harry's prot g e as well as his rumored mistress Laura Denning, incensed at returning from maternity leave to find that the temp she hired has filled her shoes all too well; and the no longer temporary Mia Anderson, who may just have a hidden agenda. But all the intramural turmoil serves as springboard for the far darker and twistier tale that emerges as the author gradually exposes these women's secret ambitions, jealousies, and sorrows. Though it's tougher to empathize with some of the leading ladies than it should be new mother Laura becomes increasingly off-putting as she treats her supportive stay-at-home husband like a doormat this puzzler takes enough turns to keep readers hooked until the final bombshell. Psychological thriller fans will look forward to more from Perks.

A tad disappointing
Was intrigued by the great comments about a fab read that will keep me gripped and fascinated so was looking forward to thrilling ride! Ok it was well written but if you like to read about three of main characters’ interesting lives about childcare, relationships and mundane lives and you’re not too fussed about a murder then this is the book for you. The murder sort of passes you by in the closing stages of the book and I was excitedly waiting for the twist or dramatic ending but there wasn’t one. Just a whole load of nothing really. Disappointing.
Enjoyable
I wouldn’t describe the book as a ‘thrilling page turner’, as it says on the front cover but it nevertheless was very enjoyable. Also I’m pleased to say that I didn’t spot any jarring grammatical errors or typos which all too often spoil what would otherwise be a good read.
The largely office based setting of the plot was a pleasant change from the usual scenarios of books of a similar genre.
Some parts of the book are set in the months leading up to the main incident while others are set afterwards. I don’t always like this jumping about in time approach to storytelling but it worked well for me with most of the ‘afterwards’ sections being presented as the script of police interviews with various individuals from the story.
The way we were gradually drip fed information about the three main characters’ lives and back stories was effective so we could slowly try and guess who had done what and why.
This wasn’t my idea of a perfect book but I read it in three days, a sign of a good story, and I recommend it. It’s well worth 5*.
