Three Plays: Redemption, The Power of Darkness and Fruits of Culture

The Living Corpse, also known in English as Redemption and as Reparation) is a play by Leo Tolstoy (1828–1910). Although written around 1900, it was only published shortly after his death; Tolstoy had never considered the work finished. An immediate hit, it still holds a prominent place in the repertoire of world theater.

The Power of Darkness is a five-act dramatic play by Leo Tolstoy, written in 1886. The play was long-banned in Russia. The central character is a peasant, Nikita, who seduces and abandons a young girl Marinka; then the lovely Anisija murders her own husband to marry Nikita. He impregnates his new stepdaughter, then, under his wife's influence, murders the baby. On the day of his stepdaughter's marriage, he surrenders himself and confesses to the police.
