Throwing Stones

Throwing Stones goes where no self-respecting travel book has gone before – to a world populated by a tele-evangelist with trouser-loads of sugar; a busty dyke with a fancy for young, submissive playfriends; a hired thug with an aversion to fairytales; and a modest little bird, who happens to save the world from imminent disaster.

During an ill-fated university rally, Bryan has a religious experience after chuffing on some opium – which signals the beginning of Digsy’s problems, as he strives to maintain the momentum of his mutinous team.  Having to appease various gods, surviving the perils of Indian cooking and keeping the other teams at bay are just some of the adversities he faces, quite apart from the concerns he has in returning to Sydney to reattain acquaintance with an angry drug lord.


In combining travel adventure with philosophy Throwing Stones attempts the impossible, but in an admirable sort of way – a bit like He Died With A Felafel In His Hand crossed with Being and Nothingness (without the Gauloises) – Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but on an imitation magic carpet ride.


Throwing Stones meanders through cityscapes of politics and religion; the forbidding wastelands that are forgotten societies; and gets lost in the side streets of sexuality and botched drug deals, on a backpacker’s budget.
