Publisher Description
Two women. One soul.
Mirage wasn't supposed to exist. Born from the ritual that gives the witches of Starfall their power, she should have been destroyed. Instead she survived, and grew up to become one of the most lethal Hunters the land has ever seen.
Miryo wasn't supposed to fail. But when her initiation at Starfall goes awry, she realizes her double is still alive. Now she must hunt down Mirage and put an end to something that should never have begun.
But how can a witch kill the perfect warrior, when her own magic is trying to kill her?

Got there in the end
I really wanted to love this book. I'd read driftwood and loved that to the whole 5 stars, so wanted to read another book by the same author. But, I found this one much harder to get into. Eventually I was into it, her imagination is great so I knew the world was there somewhere. I think this is an earlier work , so stands to reason the writing isn't quite as immersive. The magic system, or at least the bureaucracy around it is complicated. The characters... well I'm not gonna say anything as it might be a spoiler, but I'm not that fussed about the second book. I can leave the story right where it is and be satisfied.
Still love driftwood and might go back to some of the authors later work and hope to find some more of the extraordinary, fantastical ideas that I know she can produce. This book felt a bit humdrum in comparison.
