What a Way to Go, the much-anticipated new read from How to Kill Your Family author Bella Mackie, opens with a lavish 60th birthday party for the wealthy (and much-reviled) finance whizz, Anthony Wistern—one of the novel’s three narrators. Wistern soon comes to an untimely end, impaled on a spike in the family lake, leaving behind his waspish wife, Olivia, and four self-centred adult children eager to get their hands on their inheritance. His death is officially ruled a tragic accident but questions are soon raised, not least by Wistern himself, who must figure out exactly how he died before he can move on from the “processing centre” into the next stage of the afterlife. With no love lost between Wistern and just about anyone he ever came into contact with, the case immediately attracts the attention of The Sleuth, an avid true crime obsessive who shares her suspicions that Wistern was murdered by a member of his own family with a snowballing number of online followers. As the mystery unfolds, secrets are revealed, scandal ensues and The Sleuth’s investigation spirals dangerously out of control.
