Brookmyre (A Snowball in Hell) introduces Det. Insp. Catherine McLeod and PI Jasmine Sharp in her solid first entry in a new Glasgow crime series. In alternating chapters, perceptive Catherine looks into the murder of a drug dealer, who was a henchman of a local mobster, while inexperienced Jasmine searches for her PI uncle/boss, who went missing while working a case involving a family that disappeared decades before. Jasmine's only lead is Glen Fallan, a professional assassin who's rumored to have been dead for 20 years. Catherine's police investigation and Jasmine's hunt realistically intersect as each learns they are up against "the biggest gang in Glasgow," and that trust, even in the police force, is a rare commodity. Brookmyre at his best!
A new genre for Brookmyre, but still writing from the Scots author at his best!
Didn’t quite reach the heights
The opening sets the scene and characters well like many of Brookmyre’s books. But this I felt didn’t quite reach the expected levels. We have a mysterious missing uncle and later more unaccounted missing bodies and corruption in the police, but the conclusions didn’t satisfy me.
Still engaging but felt there were too many elements of cliche.

The beginning of Brookmyre's 'new' direction, and frankly not dissimilar to the old one. A lot more grounded than his more recent work, and not quite as comedy based as his earlier stuff. Still enough humour to keep me happy though! Will be buying When the Devil Drives shortly :)
