“Who Is Sylvia” is the closest of the nine novels in the California Saga series that might be classified as a ‘Romance Novel’. It is a story about a beautiful young woman who is being pursued after a fashion by a former student of hers. Sylvia O’Donnell, not so affectionally known as the “Ice Princess” has been the rather idyllic goal of Phillip Esterházy for many years. He hadn’t seen her for many years, when a good friend told him that his ideal woman was working as a naturalist in Yosemite National Park. Phil had never described her physically, he’d just described her abilities, and for nothing better, her aura. He did not tell his friend that she was about four inches taller than his rather muscular five feet, ten inches. He also hadn’t told his friend that she was drop-dead gorgeous.
Half Dome is one of two definitive massifs in Yosemite that help define it. The other is El Capitan; however, there is a heck of a lot more to Yosemite than that as we will find out. The two meet on Half Dome in the first few pages. Phillip was there just to complete the climb. It was probably on his ‘bucket list’. It is not an easy climb, and over 20 hikers have fallen to their deaths since 1919 when the ‘cables’ were installed. Sylvia was there to chase people off the top due to a weather change that was bringing in thunderstorms.
Together they take a panicked hiker from the top. Phil carries him down the ladders with Sylvia’s assistance, and the romance begins. It’s not easy for either of them, but love does win. However, that’s just the beginning of the story. They run into an insane, bent on murder man from both their pasts. It isn’t going to be easy.
