The Awakening

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice. Edna Pontellier is twenty-eight, married to a New Orleans businessman who is kind in the way a good watch is kind, and mother to two boys she loves without ever feeling like a mother. One summer at Grand Isle she learns to swim, and something in her that had been held down for years comes loose.

What follows is not a scandal but an inventory: a friendship with a woman who paints, an infatuation with a young man who leaves for Mexico to escape it, a small house of her own, an afternoon she cannot explain afterwards. Edna begins to ask a question nobody around her can answer, least of all the people who love her, and Kate Chopin refuses to soften either the question or the cost of asking it.

Published in 1899 and condemned on publication, The Awakening is now read as the first American novel to take a woman's inner life seriously on its own terms. It is short, exact, and quietly devastating.

This unabridged recording keeps Chopin's cool, close third person intact, letting the sea and the silence do their work.
