It sounded too easy: place a patch on your arm for a day and live forever.

But it was true.

Wrinkled skin smoothed. Grey hair darkened. The aches and pains of age faded into memory. Within a generation people forgot what it meant to grow old. Immune to every disease anyone had ever known, death became a rarity—something that happened only through accident or violence.

We conquered our mortality.

The effect on society was profound. Not every change was easy, but what emerged was undeniably better than what came before. Some even called it utopia.

And then the world ended.

Scientists warned that climate collapse would make most of our world uninhabitable within thirty years. A desperate plan was launched to build thousands of floating cities—Sky Islands—vast domed habitats drifting high in the cool upper atmosphere.

They were wrong.

The collapse came in five years.

Billions died as the planet overheated faster than anyone thought possible. Only a single Sky Island was ever completed. In the end, just 3,200 people survived.
