Aung San Suu Kyi is known for her courageous stand for democracy and human rights inside Burma (now Myanmar). Nobel Prize Laureate, devout Buddhist, Daughter of the martyred Burmese national hero who negotiated Burma's independence from Britain in the 1940s, mother of two; Aung San Suu Kyi is one of the most inspiring examples of spiritually influenced politics and fearless leadership that the world has ever seen. Forced to endure many years of house arrest by the military junta, she continues to act as a focus for change inside the country now that she is free. Such is her determined action for the best interests of Burma that she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.

One of the very few people she has trusted enough to take her message to the wider world is Alan Clements, the first American to be ordained as a Buddhist monk in Burma. Shortly after her release from her first house arrest in July 1995, Alan met with Aung San Suu Kyi over a period of 9 months.
