Black Ball 9

Black Ball is an annual publication for new and authoritative research on all subjects related to black baseball, including the Negro major and minor leagues, pre-Negro League organization and play, and the integration of major league baseball. With articles from across the disciplines, employing a wide range of scholarly approaches, Black Ball promotes the serious study of African American sporting history and culture.

   The current work, number 9, includes articles on the mythic structure of Satchel Paige's career, the evolution of integration narratives, Monte Irvin's career outside of the majors, J.B. Martin and 1940 Memphis politics, the achievements of Larry Doby and Jackie Robinson, and Buck O'Neil's contributions to Kansas City and black baseball. Also included are book reviews and details on recently published research.
