In this installment of Marc Cameron’s thriller series, the lifelong tracker is on a low-key assignment to secure a sequestered jury during a federal trial. But a D.A.’s murder throws Cameron’s flinty hero into an investigation of a massive drug-running ring with some extremely heavy connections. A former U.S. Marshal himself, Cameron knows a thing or two about catching bad guys, which shows in this thriller’s gritty tone and heart-pounding pacing. His descriptions of Alaska’s raw beauty are also especially transportive, as is his sensitive, multifaceted portrayal of the state’s Native population. If this is your first Arliss Cutter thriller, don’t worry about coming into the series late. Just strap in for a wild, violent ride.

Merculief has orders to protect any unearthed human remains or burial sites. Others oppose Merculief's decision, and ensure that the archaeologist permanently disappears. Eventually, the circumstances of Merculief's disappearance come to Cutter's attention, but the lawman has a lot of other things on his plate, including the mystery of a woman's torso that washed ashore near Anchorage, the trial of two vicious drug traffickers, and the assassination of a federal official. Cameron draws on his own service as a deputy federal marshal in Alaska and his expertise in tracking down people, and he does a good job balancing the multiple plotlines as well as characterization and action. Owen Laukkanen fans will be pleased.
