Alice Hegan Rice, a.k.a Alice Caldwell Hegan, (Jan 11, 1870 – Feb 10, 1942) was an American writer and author of dozens of books. Her most notable work is Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch that became a bestseller and was adapted to a movie. Many of her works were translated in multiple other languages. Rice was also known for her sort stories written for magazines. Hegan was married to a known poet and dramatist Cale Young Rice. 

Calvary Alley is a novel by Alice Hegan Rice. The narrative follows Nance Molloy, a young girl, who receives little guidance from her elder relatives and mostly left to her own devices. With help Christian faith, she finds a way deal with most of her misfortunes. She tries to bring this faith and all good things coming with it home, but her family stubbornly opposes her.
