Publisher Description
Starring a female police detective and set in Iceland, “this procedural series [is] a standout” (Kirkus Reviews).
Officer Gunnhildur Gísladóttir, recently promoted from her post in rural Iceland to Reykjavík’s Serious Crime Unit, is tasked with hunting down escaped convict Long Ommi, who has embarked on a spree of violent score-settling in and around the city. Meanwhile, Gunna is also investigating the murder of a fitness guru in her own city-center apartment.
As the officer delves into the cases, she unearths some unwelcome secrets and influential friends shared by both guru and convict. In an Iceland plagued by an ongoing financial crisis, Gunna has to take stock of the whirlwind changes that have swept through the country—and the fact that at the highest levels of power, the system’s endemic corruption leads, inevitably, to murder in this “twisty, complex, and dark” work of crime fiction (Booklist).
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
In British author Bates's solid follow-up to 2010's Frozen Assets, Gunnhildur "Gunna" G slad ttir, now a sergeant with the Serious Crime Unit in Reykjav k, Iceland, looks into the murder of minor celebrity Svana Geirs, who hosted a TV fitness show and was intimately involved with various athletes and business figures. Meanwhile, mar Magn sson, a nasty piece of work doing a stretch in prison for murder, escapes and begins causing mayhem. A rare glimpse of modern-day Iceland with its small population, troubled economy, and global ties provides the backdrop for a tricky plot involving a strong cast of police characters led by the prickly Gunna. Bates, who lived 10 years in Iceland, has an unfortunate and distracting habit of abruptly changing scene, but he still manages to engage the reader as Gunna explores the prominent men who knew Svana and deals with Magn sson's carnage.
