Empire Falls centers on Miles Roby: father, ex-husband-to-be, and manager of the struggling Empire Grill. Miles has no shortage of problems, but loneliness isn’t one of them. We loved the book’s fabulous ensemble of characters, including Miles’ bright teenage daughter, the grill’s gin-playing patrons, and the establishment’s flinty grande dame of an owner. They’re the reason Russo’s novel lingers like a haunting tune.
