INTRODUCTION One of the most significant accomplishments in medicine and public health is the development and use of vaccines for the prevention and control of infectious diseases of major public-health concern. This preventive approach is fundamental to improving health in developing countries, where curative services are scarce and disproportionately costly (1). Since the 1980s, considerable progress has been made in introducing and improving immunizations, especially among young children.As a result, almost three million lives are saved each year, and 750,000 children are saved from disability (2).
