Publisher Description

The First Epistle to the Corinthians is a Pauline epistle of the New Testament of the Christian Bible. The epistle is attributed to Paul the Apostle and a co-author named Sosthenes and is addressed to the Christian church in Corinth.

The Corinthians are so wise they studied at the most prestigious universities in the world. They absorbed the skepticism of the Greek scholars, and they knew higher criticism, so they could defy any challenger. When Paul came through like a whirlwind, this changed. The wise did not embrace his teaching, for we read in the letter that only the weak of the world came into the truth. The point is the wise could not answer him, and they gave up trying to challenge him. What happened was disappointing for Paul, for after he left the wise took control, and they led the believer community away from Paul’s advice. In the letter, he asked them to explain what changed, and why the wise in this world managed to seized control.
