Commentary Going into 2008, there were some questions whether the U.S. economy was in danger of slipping into a recession. Until recently, some observers argued things were not as bad as they seemed, but many believed we were in the early stage of what could be a very difficult period. Indeed, in early April, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, speaking to a congressional committee, admitted, "A recession is possible." Given the hype surrounding the economy and its wobbly foundation, his reluctance to add fuel to the fire was understandable.
