Publisher Description

The Information literacy standards for student learning (1998) highlight the competencies young people need to be critical users of information and creative producers of knowledge in a dynamic information society. The new standards, jointly authored by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the Association of Educational Communications and Technology (AECT), come at a propitious juncture when major curriculum areas are redefining their national standards (NCTE/IRA, NCSS, NSTA, NCTM) and stressing thinking processes as integral to learning. Beyond concepts and skills to be mastered, these standards address methods of investigating and reasoning, means of communication, and notions of context (ERIC, 1994). They require that students be able to link knowledge and values as they engage in inquiry-based action. Information literacy with its emphasis on higher-order thinking, is clearly intertwined with these processes.
