John Crowe Ransom was a young soldier fighting in World War I when he began to put together a collection of poetry, and he found that one of the common topics was God, no matter what situation or stresses were bearing down on him, and no matter what his mood or emotions were at the time. The collection would be published in 1919 and titled Poems about God.
