Publisher Description

Quartet by Jean Rhys is a psychologically intense novel of love, dependency, betrayal, loneliness, and emotional survival set amid the bohemian cafés and hotels of 1920s Paris. First published in 1928, the novel follows Marya Zelli, a young expatriate woman whose already uncertain life begins to unravel after her husband is arrested and imprisoned.

With little money and few reliable friends, Marya accepts help from H. J. Heidler and his wife Lois, an English couple who invite her into their home. What initially appears to be an act of generosity soon becomes far more complicated when Marya begins an affair with Heidler. Trapped between dependence, desire, guilt, and the unequal power within the relationship, she finds herself increasingly isolated and emotionally vulnerable.

Through Marya’s experiences, Jean Rhys explores marriage, infidelity, financial insecurity, jealousy, manipulation, loneliness, and the precarious position of women living outside conventional society. Paris provides a vivid backdrop of cafés, cheap hotels, nightlife, artists, and expatriates, yet beneath its glamour lies a world of instability and emotional uncertainty.

The novel is also notable for its autobiographical elements. Marya’s situation reflects aspects of Rhys’s own experiences in Paris and her complicated relationship with writer Ford Madox Ford, giving the story an unusual sense of intimacy and psychological realism.

Quartet is an excellent choice for readers interested in classic women’s fiction, modernist literature, psychological novels, Paris between the wars, and character-driven stories of difficult relationships. With its spare style, emotional honesty, and memorable portrayal of a woman struggling for security and independence, Jean Rhys’s debut novel remains a compelling work of twentieth-century literature.
