Arnold Bennet was an English Author, first published in 1923 this novel was the winner of the James Tait Black Memorial Prize.

The novel is set in 1920's London, Henry is a miserly second-hand bookshop owner who marries Violet a neighbouring shop owner, she anticipates a secure financial future, instead she enters into a wretched existence.It is their popverty stricken maid Elsie who brings life to this bittersweet tale. A good read!
