Originally written in the 1830s, this collection of short pieces gives an early 19th-century tourist's view of various locations around the American South. Mostly confined to the Mississippi River Valley, Col. James R. Greecy records the intimate, everyday details of life in the South before the Civil War. Numerous chapters examine life in New Orleans, with one chapter in particular detailing Mardi Gras customs in the early 19th century.
