Love, loyalty, and the darkness that lurks within the human soul
Was she a murderess — or a saint? The debate went on for a generation — but the mystery was never solved. In this “biography in the form of a novel” Joseph Shearing has achieved his greatest success in the portrayal of crime — but even more, in recreating the manners, morals and the very atmosphere of French life in the middle of the last century. ("The Saturday Review", 1944-02-05: Vol 27 Iss 6)
"There has been some discussion to whether or not an actual crime was the basis of Joseph Shearing’s “The Crime of Laura Sarelle" as is usually the case with that author’s novels. I am glad to be able to clear up the matter with the following information: In 1780, a Captain Donellan, an Irishman, poisoned Sir Theodosius Boughton (Sir Theodosius Sarelle of the novel) with an essence of laurel water. (Donellan is the Captain Avershaw of the book). There was an inquest as the result of which Donellan is hanged in Warwick in 1781. Leppard Hall of the novel represents the actual Lawford Hall in Warwickshire."
