Shipley and Ralph, brothers by birth, are the most loquacious of the group, and Cox relates conversations he's had with both, often as the cats bolt in and out through the cat door following a confrontation with the local wildlife. The death of Janet, a big male cat who's none too wise, is depicted early in the book, and it leaves Cox feeling like he's "forgotten" something.
