One of Philip José Farmer’s most iconic creations, “Doc Caliban” is an alternate-universe version of the famous fictional character Doc Savage. In A Feast Unknown, Caliban and Lord Grandrith (based on Tarzan) discover they share the same devastating affliction caused by a mysterious cabal known as the Nine. In a pair of sequels—The Mad Goblin and Lord of the Trees—Farmer follows each hero on separate adventures as they pursue their revenge on the Nine. 

In The Mad Goblin, Doc Caliban tracks down one of the Nine’s most powerful members, an ancient dwarf named Iwaldi. Soon, Savage is navigating the dwarf’s deadly stronghold, a maze of tunnels honeycombed with hidden devices and traps. Whatever danger he faces, Caliban must overcome—because Iwaldi plans a hideous end to all humanity if he cannot be stopped.
