I used to boast that my first published novel was the best-proofed book in the world. And it probably was. Then someone spotted a mistake. Just one. It wasn't a big one. But it was there.

Now it's fixed, and my boast stands.

Any writer can handle the entire process themselves. Writing, checking, editing, proof-reading, formatting, cover design, online publication, marketing and sales. I did it, so I know it's possible.

The only time I paid for professional services was when I decided to print physical copies. It was just too much effort to build my own printing press and chop down the ancient sycamore dominating the back yard to turn it into 80 gsm creamy bond sheets.

But why should you have to figure this all out on your own? These days, an entire support industry has grown to assist writers with the publication process. You can find someone to help you with each step of the process.

I've published books for homeless people who wrote them in little black notebooks while huddled in the dark against highveld thunderstorms. Another friend wrote two books on his cellphone while living in a desert. If you want to write those words enough, you will find a way.
