Introduction


The region of modern Ukraine has a long and diversified history. Over the centuries, it was populated by large numbers of different peoples who wanted to exploit the immense resources, rich soil, and strategic location of this vast steppe along the Black Sea. For much of its history, Ukraine endured turmoil while its lands and people were partitioned by other nations. Yet even under Soviet rule, the Ukrainian people continued to foster their national identity and culture. Now, after more than 20 years of independence, Ukraine is slowly rising to its potential as a powerful nation.
