Mack Reynolds was a popular science fiction author from the 1950s through the 1970s. His works usually dealt with several themes including alternate socio-economic systems, utopian flaws, and revolution towards social change. Reynolds was also the first to write a novel based on the television series, Star Trek, named Mission to Horatius.


Ultima Thule follows Ronnie Bronston in his employment with United Planets, an agency whose purpose is to ensure that planets avoid conflict with one another. His first assignment is to track down Tommy Paine, an interstellar terrorist who has caused trouble for several decades.
