Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe was a bestseller at the time that Twelve Years a Slave was published. The success of Stowe's anti-slavery novel caused the public to reconsider slave narratives in new ways, and it is credited with paving the way for the American Civil War. Twelve Years a Slave was dedicated to Beecher Stowe upon its publication.
