Spain’s brilliant investigator Antonia Scott is already mourning a tremendous personal loss when the shadowy international organization she works for suddenly comes under deadly attack. Now Antonia and her partner and protector, Jon, have to match wits with the criminal genius behind it all in a perilous cat-and-mouse game—one with an extremely specific deadline. Gómez-Jurado makes plot twists that might come off as ludicrous in lesser hands feel palpably real and exciting. In part, that’s because Antonia and Jon are such well-rounded and fascinating characters, and their story is told from multiple POVs that add interesting angles on what’s happening. Newcomers can read and enjoy White King as a gripping standalone, but it’s even better if you start with its predecessors, Red Queen and Black Wolf.
