In Anthony Award winner Coyle's edgy seventh Rick Cahill novel (after 2019's Lost Tomorrows), the California PI, who was blinded nine months earlier by a gunshot wound, is trying to adjust to his new life, though he's heartened by signs that his sight is coming back. Against his better instincts, Rick agrees to help Moira MacFarlane, his friend and fellow PI, interview Turk Muldoon, his former best friend with whom he had a falling out, as part of a case. Rick and Moira meet Turk at the steak house Turk owns in La Jolla, where Turk gives the impression he's hiding something. When a murder related to the case occurs later, Turk becomes the prime suspect. Rick remains convinced of his friend's innocence, creating a rift with Moira. As the murder case works toward a surprising conclusion, readers will be pleased that Rick regains his confidence and his sight improves. Those unfamiliar with Rick's complicated backstory may feel lost at times, but established fans will enjoy catching up with an old friend.
