The snow-line was receding gradually from the valley floor as the spring sunshine gave increasing warmth with each passing day.  The thaw had meant that the stream which ran through the valley was free of ice along the full length of its twisted course past the village.  Only where it passed between the big rocks and forked into the two ravines, which formed the upper valley, was ice still present.

Of course the plateau, one thousand feet above the village, as well as the high peaks beyond were still locked in a mantle of snow and ice.  It would be weeks before there was any perceptible change up there and the melting snow
