This book depicts nineteeenth century American romances . The hero is generally 15 (or more) years older than the heroine, he is usually agnostic or at best a man of little faith, and through some chance of fate he is the heroine's mentor, guardian or protector. The heroine is usually orphaned, in actual fact or in circumstances. She is always, always very intelligent. She is steadfastly honest, independent, direct and devout.
