APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
The idea of home is a precious and fragile thing in this poignant historical novella from Claire Keegan. The unnamed narrator is a young girl from a large, destitute family in rural Ireland. When her mother becomes pregnant with yet another child, the girl is sent to spend an indefinite number of months with the Kinsellas, distant relatives who don’t have any kids of their own. Through our innocent heroine’s POV, we get to see her horizons widen to include things she’s never even imagined. Those include small comforts, like clean sheets and warm baths, and also big ones, like freely given kindness. Keegan’s sparse prose feels perfect for this simple yet profound tale. Brilliantly, the author rarely spells out what her main character is learning from her experiences with the Kinsellas, letting our young narrator’s bittersweet time with them linger in the things left unsaid.
