Oral Manifestations of Sexually Transmitted Infections

The purpose of this course is to introduce dental professionals to the pathophysiology of STIs, their oral manifestations, systemic complications, available treatment options, and any modifications required for dental treatment. In addition, members of the public may use this course to enhance their personal knowledge of the subject matter presented.


Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:


1. Outline the spectrum of diseases that are transmitted sexually and their impact on public health.

2. Describe the underlying pathogenesis and treatment of gonorrhea and syphilis.

3. Identify oral lesions that are associated with genital herpes, human papillomavirus, and Epstein-Barr virus.

4. Analyze the systemic implications of chlamydia.

5. Review dental treatment modifications that are required for patients with HIV/AIDS.
