Very gently, Caden nestled Ruby against his chest, and she welcomed the warmth of his body. She was freezing, probably in shock, and her teeth chattered as she shivered.
He cradled her and pressed a kiss to her forehead. “Hold on, babe. I’ve got you. It’ll be all right.” Long fingers splayed around her shoulder, and he smoothed the hair away from her cheeks with his free hand. “I’m so sorry I wasn’t there for you. It’ll never happen again—I promise. I’ll look after you. Close your eyes and relax, and I’ll make it better soon.”
