Mr Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet have decided to marry for the most pragmatic of reasons: so that they might each avoid being forced into less amiable matches. In Elizabeth's case, the marriage is welcomed with open arms by her family, who happily forsake Mr Collins of Hunsford for Mr Darcy of Pemberley, yet in selecting Elizabeth for his bride, Darcy has succeeded in utterly alienating Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
