The Enigmatic World of Science

Description: In this interdisciplinary book we present a fascinating learning unit about scientific thought, the transformation of data into information and the concept of statistical significance, through several activities dealing with garbage management. It is aimed at 11th graders and covers the areas of Biology, Math and English. It includes texts both in English and Spanish and allows for interactivity with the teacher. The student will explore, through its content and learning activities, the characteristics of scientific thought and the foundations of scientific research. S/he will be able to build a project about garbage disposal in his/her community. Using statistical data, s/he will identify if the garbage production patterns are related to the economic status of the population and if they have changed in view of the laws that strive to preserve the environment. S/he will also create an experience to foster awareness in a small kid about the excessive production of garbage in our daily lives. 

Descripción: En este libro interdisciplinario presentamos una interesante unidad de aprendizaje sobre el pensamiento científico, la transformación de datos en información y la significancia estadística, a partir de experiencias relacionadas con el manejo adecuado de la basura. Está dirigida a alumnos de segundo de bachillerato (11° grado) en las áreas de inglés, biología y matemáticas. Incluye textos en inglés y español y permite interactividad con el docente. El lector explora, a través de los contenidos y actividades de aprendizaje propuestas, las características del pensamiento científico y las bases de la investigación científica. Podrá desarrollar un proyecto sobre la disposición de la basura en su comunidad. A partir de datos estadísticos, identificará si los patrones de producción de basura están asociados al nivel económico de la población y si han cambiado en función de leyes que pretenden preservar el medio. También, podrá generar una experiencia de concientización sobre la producción excesiva de basura, con un niño pequeño.
