After Will Talland loses his girlfriend Lena in a tragic hiking accident at the start of what was supposed to be a life-changing trail, his entire world stops turning. 

To cope with his grief, he starts writing in Lena's trail diary, only to be amazed when — she responds. 

Sceptical at first, soon Will yields to the diary's promise that he'll rediscover happiness if he completes the trail on his own.

As he walks cross-country, getting to know the British Isles, its people — and himself, the plan seems to work: Will slowly comes back to life.
