A Promise of Eternity

The year is 1914. When Alison tells her father, Owen, that she is in love with an African American and wishes to marry him. He is angry and refuses to give her permission. After Alison begs and begs, he says that he'll give his blessing only if Alison's fiancé fights in World War I—something he isn't likely to survive.
