Arthur Dent (ca. 1553-1607), an ardent Puritan, was born in Melton, Leicestershire, England. He authored the Elizabethan bestseller, The Plain Man’s Pathway to Heaven, which had a profound influence on John Bunyan during his long struggle to conversion. Dent became a learned and pious minister in South Shooberry, Essex. In 1583, he published his Sermon of Repentance, which immediately became widely used. He suffered persecution from Bishop Aylmer for non-conformity to the Church of England’s hierarchy and to the traditions of men added to Anglican worship.
