I was in Da Nang, Vietnam on China Beach where some serious action occurred during the Vietnam War. Only now it was calm and I couldn’t even fathom anything else but the current peace. Most of the inhabitants of this big city, now flocked to the beach area before sunrise to enjoy a peaceful swim followed by a strong morning Vietnamese coffee. I was cooling down in the wind while scooting back to my abode just meters from the beach. A strong realisation that my time-out from my previously unfulfilling lifestyle had been too short, crossed my mind. I decided to stay on, right there on the back of my steed.


These kinds of actions inevitably end up being adventurous one way or another. My journey is no different but actually started before even getting on a plane to Vietnam. It started in France. The first steps in the newfound freedom was somewhat daunting. The six episodes in this series ‘Free at last’, is about this lifestyle change that started as time out....and continued for a while.


I needed survival skills…did I have them? I faced new and different kinds of challenges that took me to new places and meet new people I wouldn’t have seen or met otherwise. I found my feet, sort of, trying to keep head above water. Then I met a group of musicians and got some rest for my soul. The rest didn’t last long. A cheap plane ticket made me find my feet in a new city. A base was what I needed, for a while. I rented a motorbike and started exploring....and found a remote little seaside village. Once again I needed survival skills. Solace is found when I discovered a beach bar… but maybe not for the reasons you might think. I kept on making new discoveries, of places, people and myself. My new base proved to be an excellent launching pad. I could finally unpack. A French touch changed some of my perspectives. All the adventures that the exploring brought, unknowingly got me to face reality time and again. A friend came to visit….a sounding board of some sorts… Would I find what I didn’t know I was looking for? My base also may not be as temporary as I once thought it would be. I faced decisions that might alter my life somewhat….
