Publisher Description
An Apple Books Classic edition.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s enduring detective takes on thirteen captivating mysteries in this short story collection.
Putting his immensely satisfying deductive powers to work, the legendary Holmes tackles everything from a perplexing locked-door murder to an eccentric criminal who’s obsessed with Napoleon. The compilation also contains one of the few Sherlock Holmes stories in which the emerging science of fingerprints helps to solve a case.
Published after the star detective had appeared to die in a previous story (which Holmes explains to a most relieved Watson in the opening tale), these mysteries crackle with Conan Doyle’s renewed enthusiasm for his beloved character. This is classic mystery fiction at its most thrilling.

A historical landmark of Holmes-Watson
I like it better reading Sherlock Holmes in short stories because in this novel Holmes is only first half of this novel while the second half is about a narration of the history between the killer and the victim. So, the focus of this novel is divided between Holmes and the narrative of the murder motive. However, this novel gives a glimpse of that moment when Watson first met Holmes, and, for that, it is well worth a look especially for a “Sherlock Holmes novice”.
