Olive Kitteridge is a moody, irascible math teacher living in small-town Maine. Despite being far from what most would call likeable, Elizabeth Strout’s prickly heroine has a strange charisma that seems to fascinate everyone around her—including us. Olive Kitteridge is a novel told through short stories that explore the heroine from the points of view of different neighbours and acquaintances. Narrator Kimberly Farr makes capturing Olive’s many contradictions look easy. Her warm but unaffected delivery perfectly embodies the book’s entire cast of hardscrabble, small-town characters, making every one of Strout’s creations feel like a real and vital person. Each chapter reveals a surprising truth, from an elderly husband’s infidelity to a minister’s daughter’s rebellion to crotchety Olive’s own unexpected acts of kindness. This is a perfect listen for a car ride.
