The Lost Child

Across a sunlit river, the Australian bush promises adventure. For one lonely little boy, the forest beyond his home seems filled with wonders—and perhaps companions waiting to be found.

Despite his mother’s warnings, the child crosses the water and begins exploring. Strange animals, towering trees, and unexpected discoveries draw him farther into the wilderness. But as daylight fades, delight gives way to fear: he no longer knows the way home.

While two young men and their faithful dog follow his trail, the landscape grows steeper, colder, and more unforgiving.

In The Lost Child, Henry Kingsley contrasts the freedom of childhood curiosity with the dangers of a world beyond a child’s understanding. With vivid descriptions of the Australian landscape and a deeply sorrowful tenderness, this nineteenth-century short story explores innocence, vulnerability, and loss.

A brief, haunting listen for lovers of classic literature and emotionally powerful storytelling.
