Introduction The United States' Hispanic population has increased dramatically over the past decade. (1) This second largest minority group is on the verge of being the largest in the United States. (1-4) It is estimated that the numbers of Hispanics in the United States has risen from 9% of the general population in 1990, to 12.5% in 2000. (5,6) Wichita, located in Sedgwick County, is the largest city in Kansas. The Hispanic population there has increased from 5.0% in 1990 to 9.6% in 2000. (7,8) Hispanic is the second largest and fastest growing racial/ethnic population in Wichita. Mexican American is the largest subgroup of Wichita's Hispanic population. (9) Many find low paying agricultural or construction jobs in the city and throughout the rural areas of Kansas.
